In the province of Ontario, translators can be considered as “certified translators” ONLY after having fulfilled all the requirements established by the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (commonly referred to by its acronym, ATIO) and successfully passed its relevant examination.
These certified translators are issued, by the ATIO, an individualized and numbered raised seal and all their translations are to be sealed accordingly as proof of their authenticity.
Clients who require a translation should be aware of the following facts:
- Certified translations prepared by ATIO-certified translators are officially accepted in ALL organizations and establishments in Ontario. There are in fact some organizations which will ONLY accept translations made by ATIO-certified translators. Therefore, for clients to be assured and avoid future complications, delays and additional notarization costs, it is highly recommended to research the credibility of the translators they select and the requirements of the organizations for which the translations are needed.
- Clients using the services of an ATIO-certified translator need to make sure that the language pair for which the translation is required is the one for which the translator is certified; for example, a birth certificate in the Farsi / Persian language should be translated by a translator who is certified in the “Farsi to English” language pair.
